RACGP welcomes the appointment of the new Minister for Health and his commitment to general practice

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) welcomes the appointment of Peter Dutton as the new Federal Minister for Health, and Senator Fiona Nash as Assistant Minister for Health.

In the week leading up to the election, the Coalition promised that its first 100 days in leadership will focus on general practice and primary healthcare, citing the absolute necessity to rebuild the standing of general practice.

Dr Liz Marles, RACGP President, said the new Health Minister has been vocal in the new Government’s focus on primary healthcare and the recognition of the central role that general practice plays in best health outcomes.

“There are currently considerable barriers in place at the general practice level that restrict general practitioners (GPs) ability to deliver accessible and affordable healthcare to all Australians.

“It is encouraging to see that removing bureaucracy and cutting red tape within the general practice setting is already high on the new Health Minister’s agenda,” said Dr Marles.

In shaping the future of the Australian healthcare system, Minister Dutton has pledged to position general practice as a valuable, diverse and essential medical specialty for incoming medical students and interns.

“A commitment to general practice training is the best way to ensure that all Australians, now and in the future, will have continued access to high quality and affordable healthcare services.

“There is considerable work to be done, and the RACGP is committed to working with the Government in achieving these goals,” said Dr Marles.

The RACGP will meet with Minister-elect Dutton, Assistant Minister-elect Nash and members of the Government’s health team, to discuss how GPs can be supported to best meet the healthcare needs of all Australians.
