Dr Tim Mooney, a general practitioner (GP) from George Town, rural northern Tasmania, has been awarded this year’s the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) General Practice Supervisor of the Year Award.
The General Practice Supervisor of the Year Award recognises the dedication of a GP who has significantly contributed towards the training and mentoring of general practice registrars, leading by example and inspiring those coming through the system to gain a strong appreciation for the general practice profession.
Presenting the award on the eve of the GP13 conference in Darwin, Dr Liz Marles, RACGP President, congratulated Dr Mooney and acknowledged the many glowing testimonials from registrars, patients and peers provided in support of his award nomination.
“Dr Mooney is an excellent role model to his registrars and students. His energy and commitment to teaching has developed his reputation as a highly sought after supervisor, medical educator and mentor.
“Devoted to his work as a supervisor, he understands the flexible learning needs of registrars and promotes a stimulating and cultivating environment to work and learn.
“Through word-of-mouth, George Town has become a very popular rural general practice training post in Tasmania, with the Anne Street Medical Services often accommodating a number of registrars and students simultaneously.
“Equipping registrars with the confidence and skills to work in any rural general practice, hospital or emergency department across Australia, Dr Mooney’s support doesn’t stop once the registrars move on; his support continues by always happily accepting a phone call for help” said Dr Marles.
Alongside his involvement in general practice training, Dr Mooney is a member of the RACGP Board of Censors, a member of the RACGP Examination Panel and the Tasmania representative on the RACGP National Rural Faculty board.
Dr Mooney is considered a cornerstone in the George Town community and is recognised best for his tireless dedication to bettering the healthcare of the entire community, said Dr Marles.
“Dr Mooney’s commitment to his patients is second to none and is testament to the success of the Anne Street Medical Services practice that he helped establish within the George Town community,” said Dr Marles.
Dr Mooney said he was surprised and delighted to receive the award and enjoys teaching registrars immensely.
“I consider registrars as the future of general practice and I enjoy teaching them and learning from them through their training,” he said.
