New guide for GP referrals to other medical specialists

As the first point of entry into the healthcare system, specialist GPs are responsible for assessing and managing the health needs of their patients and facilitating their patient’s access to other health professionals for assessment and care.

The RACGP has developed a resource, Referring to other medical specialists: A guide for ensuring good referral outcomes for your patients to support GPs when referring to other medical specialists.

It outlines examples of how to communicate the purpose or intent of a referral to another medical specialist, including outlines of the different types of referrals used in general practice and how these should be structured. This resource also provides guidance on how to inform patients of cost, the Medicare Benefits Schedule rules for referrals, the content of referrals, the use of secure electronic communication and expectations when referring to other medical specialists.

Rural health webinar: Emergency dental for rural GPs

The RACGP will be holding its next webinar, 'Emergency dental for rural GPs’ on Thursday 5 December. The webinar is accredited for two Category 2 RACGP CPD points.

In rural and remote Australia, dental services may not be readily available and dental emergencies can occur out of hours or on weekends. This often results in patients presenting to their local GP, who may be under prepared to deal with such emergencies. This webinar is designed to provide rural and remote GPs with the knowledge, confidence and resources to competently manage commonly-presenting dental emergencies.

The RACGP Rural health webinar series presents free monthly webinars on important health issues for rural and remote GPs.

Each session is held on the first Thursday of the month with a focus on supporting GPs with relevant information and resources.

What do you want to know about Medicare?

The RACGP is seeking GP feedback to assist in the development of a new webinar series on Medicare.

The webinar series will aim to update GPs, practice owners and practice managers on the ever-changing information surrounding Medicare.

To ensure the series meets the needs of GPs, practice owners and practice managers, the RACGP is inviting members to participate in a poll, asking:

  • What do you want to hear about when it comes to Medicare?
  • What impacts you every day?

The results of this poll will help us develop the webinar series to meet your specific needs for education, professional development and relevant information updates.

Visit the RACGP website to have your say.

The dates and topics for the webinar series will be announced at the 2020 Practice Owners National Conference taking place on Saturday and Sunday 16–17 May.
