‘My Health Record in general practice’ update webinar

The Australian Parliament recently passed legislation to make a number of key changes to My Health Record, Australia’s national electronic health record. Among the changes are new provisions to protect the privacy of young people and prevent access by insurers, employers, government officials, and law enforcement agencies.

To ensure members are up-to-date with recent changes to My Health Record legislation, the RACGP is running a ‘My Health Record in general practice’ update webinar. The one-hour webinar will explain these most recent and other changes, and provide context for potential impacts for general practice.

The webinar supplements previous workshops and webinars delivered as part of the RACGP’s ‘My Health Record in general practice’ education program in 2018. GPs and practice staff are invited to join host Dr Nathan Pinskier for this important update.

A number of session times are available. Register to attend via the RACGP website.

Transfer of human papillomavirus vaccination records to the Australian Immunisation Register

Vaccination providers are advised that human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine doses can now be recorded on the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR).

The changes mean all vaccination information will now be kept in one place. GPs and vaccine providers can check patient vaccination records using the AIR site.

GPs will automatically be recognised as vaccination provider on the AIR.

Visit the Department of Human Services website to view the ‘AIR for health professionals’ page.

Amendment for claiming rules for MBS item 14050 – UVA and UVB phototherapy

The Department of Health (DoH) has advised that, where services for ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) phototherapy have appropriately involved a specialist in the speciality of dermatology, item 14050 can be claimed.

For a patient to be eligible for a Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) rebate for UVA and UVB phototherapy (item 14050), involvement of a specialist in the speciality of dermatology is required. At a minimum, the relevant specialist’s involvement should include a letter stating the diagnosis, need for phototherapy, estimated time of treatment and review date (Explanatory Note TN.1.14). Adequate records need to be maintained when providing or initiating a service for which a Medicare benefit is payable.

The DoH is working with the Department of Human Services to ensure claims for MBS item 14050 that have already been rejected can be resubmitted.

If RACGP members have a query regarding previous claims for item 14050, members can contact askMBS for clarification, via email askMBS@humanservices.gov.au or through their enquiry line 13 21 50.

The RACGP provides updates to MBS changes on its website, where the MBS fee summary is available to members for download.

Essential infrastructure to support quality, safety and risk management in RACFs

The RACGP is looking at developing Standards for aged care services to ensure GPs working in residential aged care facilities (RACFs) can access essential infrastructure to support quality, safety and risk management. In order to guide this work, it would be useful to understand more about the challenges facing GPs working in aged care.

If you are a GP who works in a residential aged care facility, what infrastructure, equipment or systems are the most important to support high-quality patient care?
