Clinical Pearl: Physical fitness training following a stroke

Physical fitness is often reduced in patients following a stroke, limiting their ability to perform everyday activities and worsening any stroke-related disability.

Most stroke survivors are able to participate in a variety of short-term fitness training regimens, either during usual stroke care or after hospital discharge. Physical fitness training helps patients who are ambulatory following a stroke to reduce the risk of disability via improved mobility and balance. It can also help in the management of stroke comorbid conditions and risk factors (eg, blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, depression). Exercise regimen includes cardiorespiratory training, such as walking, ergometry, circuit training and aquatic exercise, as well as mixed training (cardiorespiratory and resistance training).

Visit the RACGP’s Handbook of non-drug interventions (HANDI) for more information, including consumer resources.
