Resources available on AusVaxSafety and vaccine preventable diseases

New resources for AusVaxSafety and vaccine preventable diseases have been produced by the Department of Health (DoH) and the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) for health professionals.

The DoH has released the first annual report from the AusVaxSafety national surveillance system which summarises information from parents and carers who responded to an SMS about their child's health a few days after receiving a vaccine at routine National Immunisation Program (NIP) schedule points in 2016–17.

The report is supported by a range of infographics with visual representations of engagement at each schedule point.

The AIHW have released a series of vaccine-preventable disease fact sheets for health professionals, providing information about the 17 diseases vaccinated against under the NIP and vaccine uptake.

Visit the AIHW website to download the vaccine-preventable diseases factsheets.

Is your practice prepared for an emergency?

The festive season is Australia’s hottest time of the year, which comes with increased risk of bushfires and extreme weather events. A number of RACGP resources are available to support general practices to prepare for, respond to and recover from the impacts of extreme weather and other emergencies.

The RACGP resource Managing emergencies in general practice: A guide for preparation, response and recovery provides an overview of the emergency planning process and outlines a range of activities that can be undertaken to maintain business continuity and help protect practice infrastructure during emergency events. A suite of fact sheets on specific emergency related topics are also available to complement this resource.

Visit the RACGP website for further information on managing emergencies in general practice.

In Practice Poll: Essential infrastructure to support quality, safety and risk management in RACFs

The RACGP is looking at developing Standards for aged care services to ensure GPs working in residential aged care facilities (RACFs) can access essential infrastructure to support quality, safety and risk management. In order to guide this work, it would be useful to understand more about the challenges facing GPs who work in aged care.

If you are a GP who works in a residential aged care facility, what infrastructure, equipment or systems are the most important to support high-quality patient care?
