Poll results: My Health Record national expansion

My Health Record, the Federal Government’s national eHealth record system, is set to expand in 2018. Every person known to Medicare who has not already registered for My Health Record will be given their own record, unless they choose to opt out during a three-month period later in the year.

The RACGP polled members to investigate whether they feel prepared to manage the impacts of the national expansion of My Health Record. General practice staff will likely see an increase in patient enquiries about the purpose and use of My Health Record as the government begins its public awareness campaign.

An overwhelming majority of poll respondents (80%) indicated they do not feel prepared and would like further support as the opt-out period approaches. This result shows GPs lack a clear understanding of the purpose and functionality of My Health Record. Many GPs have questions about how patients can benefit from using My Health Record, as well as their own legislative requirements and impacts for practice workflow.

Only 18% stated they felt adequately prepared for the expansion, with a further 2% indicating they felt neither prepared nor unprepared.

The RACGP thanks all poll respondents for taking time to provide feedback, which will inform plans to assist members with My Health Record resources over the coming months. A GP-led program of webinars and workshops will follow, with event details to be announced soon. For more information, please email the eHealth and Practice Systems team at ehealth@racgp.org.au.
