Clinical Pearl: Do you know which communities are at increased risk for family abuse and violence?

Violence against women is a public health and human rights problem that occurs in all communities and cultures across Australia.

There is no single cause of family violence. However, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation and socio-economic status can all intersect to affect a person’s risk of family violence. These factors can also influence how people access and experience support and services to stay safe and recover from violence.

People at greater risk of experiencing family abuse and violence include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, women from migrant and refugee backgrounds, people who identify as LGBTIQ and women in non-urban areas. As family violence is experienced differently by different people, GPs and their teams have an important role in responding to, caring for and offering support to affected patients in an accessible and culturally sensitive manner.
