Growing up in remote country Victoria, Dr Prue Plowright knew her future would lead her back to a rural area, but never quite as far as Derby in the Kimberley, Western Australia.

Prue’s passion to work within Aboriginal communities developed early as a medical student. She knew the choice to specialise in general practice was the clear path towards making this passion become a reality.

As a remote GP, Prue truly values being involved in patients’ healthcare, to be there for a couple’s antenatal journey and also looking after their children as they grow up. She feels genuinely connected to her patients, to her community and to the vast surroundings of Derby.

"You're heading out into this majestic world that probably not many have the opportunity to visit, particularly some of the closed communities. There's something really special about being part of such an amazing little community and getting to share it with my family. I feel very privileged to be part of it."

Despite working in a very remote town, Prue strives to ensure her patients have access to quality primary health care, equal to those who choose to live in urban areas.

Together with a team of Aboriginal health workers, nurses, allied health professionals and doctors, Prue works to provide the best service possible to her patents, with the resources available.

For Prue, general practice is both challenging and satisfying, knowing that what she does each day has a positive impact on the lives of her patients.
