Policy update notice: Vocational Training Pathway Requirements for Fellowship policy – 23 January 2020

Updated extended skills term requirements

23 January 2020

Notice of RACGP policy update

This notice is to advise that the RACGP has updated its Vocational Training Pathway - Requirements for Fellowship Policy following feedback from stakeholders. This update relates only to the extended skills (ES) term requirements.

What has changed?

Clause 5.2.c of the Vocational Training Pathway - Requirements for Fellowship Policy has been amended. The following changes have been made:

Rules around clinical ES posts minimum part-time hours have been clarified in policy.

Rules around non-clinical ES posts have been clarified. This includes any post where a component of the post is deemed non-clinical, including Registrar Liaison Officer and Registrar Medical Educator positions.

What does this mean?

RTOs are not required to recognise an RLO’s time towards training and the final decision to accredit the post remains with the RTO.

All ES component posts need to be recorded clearly in RIDE including RLO work and skill maintenance of ARSTs.

When does the change take place?

The change will be fully implemented in 2021.

Transitional arrangements for 2020.1 and 2020.2 are that any non-clinical terms already planned are allowed, however RTOs must ensure registrars have at least 3 months FTE of clinical work in their ES terms overall for ES terms commenced in 2020. In 2021, the new arrangements will apply.

Where can I view the documents?

The updated Vocational Training Pathway - Requirements for Fellowship Policy  can be accessed via the Fellowship Pathways Policy Framework. The updated Standards for General Practice Training can be accessed here.
