Policy update notice: Practice Experience Program – Standard Stream Eligibility Policy and General Practice Experience Pathway – Exam Eligibility Policy – 23 July 2021

23 July 2021

Notice of RACGP policy update

This notice is to advise that the RACGP has updated its policies on the Practice Experience Program Standard Stream (PEP Standard) eligibility requirements and the Fellowship of the RACGP (FRACGP) examination eligibility for participants on the General Practice Experience (GPE), which includes PEP Standard participants.

The new Practice Experience Program – Standard Stream Eligibility Policy and General Practice Experience Pathway – Exam Eligibility the come into immediate effect, superseding the previous versions as of today, Monday 26 July, 2021.

What has changed?

The changes do not affect PEP Standard participants as the RACGP has made these changes to clarify what is already the case. Please see the table below:

Change

Rationale

Implications

We have reviewed the Practice Experience Program – Standard Stream Eligibility (previously Entry) Policy and the General Practice Experience Pathway – Exam Eligibility Policy to clarify that PEP Standard participants are not eligible to sit FRACGP exams while on the program.

Previously, we did not state in policy that PEP Standard participants are not eligible to sit FRACGP exams until they have completed their program as designated in their Individual Program Requirements (IPR) and in line with the Practice Experience Program – Standard Stream Satisfactory Completion Framework.

PEP Standard participants are clear they will not be eligible to sit FRACGP exams until they have completed the program.

We have added clause 3.2.ii to the General Practice Experience Pathway – Exam Eligibility Policy to clarify that PEP Standard participants must commence their exam candidacy as soon as they are eligible.

Previously, we did not state in policy that PEP Standard participants must commence their FRACGP exam candidacy as soon as they are eligible.

PEP participants must commence their FRACGP exam candidacy as soon as they are eligible. For more information on exam candidacy, please refer to the Fellowship Exam Attempts Policy.

We have added contact details to the General Practice Experience Pathway – Exam Eligibility Policy to which GPiT can contact the RACGP with any changes to their medical registration.

Previously, it was not clear who GPiT could contact to disclose any restrictions, conditions, suspensions and/or undertakings on their medical registration.

All GPiT now know where to send details of changes to their medical registration to.

We have reviewed clause 6.2 of the Practice Experience Program – Standard Stream Eligibility (previously Entry) Policy to reflect that when transferring between programs, GPs in Training (GPiT) must resign their candidature from their previous program before entry rather than before application.

The previous clause did not accurately reflect the process we follow and what is feasible for many GPiT given Medicare provider numbers.

GPiT can now remain enrolled in their old program until they commence their new one to ensure continued Medicare provider number access.

We have reviewed the policies for consistency across our whole Fellowship Pathways Policy Framework.

We are reviewing all policies on a rolling basis to ensure there is clear alignment across the Fellowship Pathways Policy Framework, supporting our GPiT, Training Organisations and staff to navigate and apply policies.
