This notice is to advise that the RACGP has developed a guidance document providing the principles of comprehensive Australian general practice and how this applies to the Fellowship pathway for all stakeholders.
The new Comprehensive Australian General Practice Guidance Document comes into effect immediately.
Rationale for the document
The RACGP recognises the complex context of general practice within Australia. In relation to general practice training, we utilise the term ‘comprehensive Australian general practice’ across different activities including in determining the suitability of training sites and posts for GPs in training (GPiT) on their journey towards Fellowship. There has been particular difficulty for General Practice Experience (GPE) pathway and Specialist pathway participants in determining whether their past and current posts are considered fully comprehensive.
Therefore, we have developed this guidance document to clearly communicate our stance on what the principles of comprehensive Australian general practice are and how these relate to general practice training.
Implications of the document
This document provides stakeholders with:
- The principles, scope and contexts of comprehensive Australian general practice, and
- The applicability of the above to the Vocational Training, GPE and Specialist pathways.
There is particular attention paid to how the principles of comprehensive Australian general practice relate to GPE and comparability assessments, as per the Assessment of General Practice Experience Policy, General Practice Experience Pathway - Exam Eligibility Policy
and the Practice Experience Program Specialist Stream Assessment of Recency Policy
We also provide examples to demonstrate the various ways the information in this document relate to doctors and their general practice experience.
Where can I view the documents?
The new guidance document can be accessed via the Fellowship Pathways Policy Framework
