Policy update notice: Changes to PEP Specialist Stream Basic Life Support (BLS) requirements – 2 Jul 2020

2 July 2020

Notice of RACGP policy update

This notice is to advise that the RACGP has updated the Basic Life Support (BLS) requirements for candidates seeking entry into the PEP Specialist Stream, as stipulated in the Practice Experience Program (PEP) – Specialist Steam Partially Comparable Policy and the Practice Experience Program (PEP) – Specialist Steam Partially Comparable Policy (PEP Specialist Stream Entry Policies).

The updates and rationale are outlined below.

Current policy position

Updated policy position

Rationale

Currently, PEP Specialist Stream participants are not required to undertake any BLS training prior to entry into the PEP Specialist Stream.

As of 1 January 2021, all PEP Specialist Stream applicants must have completed a BLS course within the twelve months prior to applying for entry into the PEP Specialist Stream. Applicants must submit evidence of such when they submit their application.

These requirements are stated in clauses 5.1b and 5.2e of the PEP Specialist Stream Entry Policies.

Four different RACGP-approved programs are delivered via the three pathways to Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP): the Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) Program, the Remote Vocational Training Scheme (RVTS), the PEP Standard Stream, and the PEP Specialist Stream.

Currently, all candidates besides PEP Specialist Stream participants are required to complete a BLS course within the twelve months prior to undertaking general practice training in their respective program.

The changes to the PEP Specialist Stream Entry Policies have been made to address the current discrepancies between the programs, and ensure that all candidates on a pathway to FRACGP are competent in Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) prior to program entry.

When do the changes take place?

The new BLS requirements (clauses 5.1b and 5.2e of the PEP Specialist Stream Entry Policies) will come into effect on 1 January 2021.

  • Applicants applying for entry into the PEP Specialist Stream from 1 January 2021 will be required to complete a BLS course within the twelve months prior to applying for entry into the PEP Specialist Stream, and submit evidence of such when they submit their application;
  • Applicants applying for entry into the PEP Specialist Stream until and including 31 December 2020 will not be required to satisfy these requirements.
