Policy update notice: AGPT Selection Policy and Eligibility Criteria – 13 December 2021

13 December 2021

Notice of RACGP policy update

This notice is to advise that the RACGP has updated its selection policy and eligibility criteria for the Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) Program. The new Australian General Practice Training Program Selection Policy and the eligibility criteria found on page 19 of the AGPT Application Handbook come into effect on Tuesday 4 January 2022, superseding the previous corresponding policy and guidance.

What has changed?

Australian General Practice Training Program Selection Policy

The RACGP has simplified clause 3.2.iii to reflect the high level principle of how we will run the selection process using contemporary tools.

Previously, the clause was prescriptive and lengthy.

There are no policy implications.

We have added clause 3.2.vi and 4.4 stating we are committed to the Closing the Gap initiative and how we can improve access to training for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander doctors.

Previously, we had not made our position on this important topic clear within this policy.

Stakeholders understand what we will do in our commitment to workforce equity throughout the selection process.

AGPT Application Handbook

We have retired A Guide to RACGP Selection for Entry into the AGPT Program and moved all the relevant information into the AGPT Application Handbook.

We are consolidating the information we provide to stakeholders to increase user experience.

There are no policy implications.

We have added one additional criterion to the eligibility criteria for the AGPT Program to ensure all applicants have enough exam semesters remaining to pass all three Fellowship exams once exam eligible.

To comply with the Fellowship Exam Attempts Policy, candidates have a maximum of six exam semesters over three years to pass the Fellowship Examinations.

If a candidate has previously sat any of the Fellowship Exams since 2019, these exam semesters will count towards this maximum period.

Commencing on the AGPT Program will not reset exam candidacy and therefore applicants must have a minimum of one exam semester of their exam candidacy remaining to be eligible for entry.

Applicants must have a minimum of one exam semester remaining to be eligible for entry to the AGPT Program. If they have exhausted their exam candidacy (they have no attempts left) they are not eligible for entry.

When do the changes take place?

The changes to policy come into effect on 4 January 2022.
