Policy update notice: Academic Posts policy – 12 May 2020

12 May 2020

Notice of RACGP policy update

This notice is to advise that the RACGP has updated its policy on AGPT Academic Posts, following feedback from internal and external stakeholders regarding the need to increase flexibility in the concurrent clinical training component of the Academic Post. The new Academic Posts Policy comes into immediate effect and is fully implemented as of today, 12 May 2020.

What has changed?

Previously, Academic Registrars were required to complete the 0.5 Full Time Equivalent (FTE) Academic Post concurrently with a 0.5 FTE clinical training component. Registrars were only eligible to reduce the concurrent clinical training requirement if they had completed two years’ FTE active training time, including all of GPT1 and GPT2, and had passed the RACGP’s Applied Knowledge Test (AKT), Key Feature Problem (KFP) and Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE).

The eligibility requirements for reducing the concurrent clinical training requirement have now been changed to allow for more flexibility for Academic Registrars. Moving forward, all registrars undertaking an Academic Post can apply to complete the concurrent clinical component of the academic term part time, with the decision to be made at the RACGP’s discretion. The RACGP may reduce or waive the concurrent clinical requirement, to allow for the Academic Post to be undertaken part time. The revised eligibility requirements are detailed in clause 7.4 of the new policy.

Academic Registrars interested in reducing their concurrent clinical training component must apply directly to the RACGP via gpedresearch@racgp.org.au.

When do the changes take place?

The changes to policy take place immediately. Registrars in the 2021 Academic Post cohort will be able to access the updated provisions in the policy.

Where can I view the updated policy?

All policies can be accessed via the Fellowship Pathways Policy Framework.
