Applications for the 2021 intake into the AGPT Program are now closed

Extension to application period: In recognition of the current environment, the application period for the AGPT Program has been extended to allow greater flexibility for applicants during this difficult time. The revised closing date will now be 11 May 2020 at 10 am (AEST).

Change to eligibility criteria: In order to accommodate applicants who face delays in obtaining their general medical registration, due to disruptions caused by COVID-19, there will be two commencement periods available to the 2021 AGPT Program cohort; January/February and July/August 2021. To be eligible for the AGPT Program, applicants must hold, or expect to hold, general medical registration before the commencement of either of these periods. Applicants who currently hold provisional or limited registration are able to apply, however training offers made to these applicants will be conditional upon them receiving general registration before the commencement of training. If general registration is not received, the training place offer may be withdrawn.

Please note: Due to the ongoing situation in Australia regarding COVID-19, contingency planning for the Candidate Assessment and Applied Knowledge Test (CAAKT) is in progress. At this stage, the CAAKT will be going ahead on the scheduled dates with a possible extended testing period, and alternative delivery methods currently under consideration. All AGPT applicants will be kept informed of any decisions made in relation to the CAAKT.

General practice – Become a GP

.

Working in general practice is different to working in a hospital and also different to working in many other specialities. General practice offers person-centred healthcare, based on a foundation of trust between patients and their chosen GP.

The Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) Program is the leading program for doctors wishing to pursue the specialty of general practice. The AGPT Program is suited to recent medical graduates and experienced non-vocationally recognised doctors who prefer educator directed learning. Training towards Fellowship of the RACGP on this program is available in metropolitan, regional, rural and remote regions nationally over a three year (full time equivalent) period. The training is fully funded by the Commonwealth. Training is conducted across 11 training regions with the support of the contracted Regional Training Organisations (RTOs).

The RACGP is recognised as a leader in the provision of general practice education and training, supporting more than 23,000 GPs to achieve Fellowship since 1958. The RACGP is Australia’s largest professional general practice organisation and represents urban and rural general practitioners. We represent more than 40,000 members working in or towards a career in general practice.
