The prevalence of diabetes increased 2.8-fold between 2000 and 2020. Type 2 diabetes is comparatively more prevalent in lower than higher socioeconomic groups and in people living in remote and very remote areas than in those living in urban areas. The prevalence of diabetes increases with age, and is 1.3-fold more common in men than in women. Type 2 diabetes occurs in 11.8% of general practice encounters and 5.5% of patients in general practice.
