CPD for external clinical teaching visitors (ECTVs)

Purpose

This guide outlines how the RACGP recommends casual external clinical teaching visitors (ECTVs) record time spent in this role as part of their annual CPD.

Use this custom Quick log to record CPD hours following your ECTV by following these simple steps:

  1. Select the date of the visit
  2. Entre the number of hours you spent as part of the visit and report writing that are relevant to reviewing your own performance as a GP
  3. Add any reflection notes you’d like to include in your activity log, then select Submit.

As the primary purpose of an ECTV is to provide the registrar with the opportunity to receive feedback on their individual performance and consultation skills, it is recommended that that the ECT visitor not claim the full time spent with the registrar and writing up your ECTV report as part of your own professional development.

We suggest reflecting on what you learnt or took away from the ECTV. Consider how providing feedback during the ECTV or in your report has prompted you to reflect on your own practice and claim this as reviewing performance CPD.

Note that the number of hours you record may change over time. For example, you might log three hours for your first visit and then reduce the number of hours captured to one or two hours per visit thereafter, especially if you are a frequent ECT visitor.

Giving feedback on the progress and performance of a registrar following in-practice observation and assessment provides a good opportunity for you to reflect on and review your own practice, making this a reviewing performance (RP) CPD activity.

While ECTVs do not directly attract measuring outcomes (MO) hours, if you make a change to your practice as a result of your ECTV work, we recommend using the Measuring outcomes tool found in the Log menu on myCPD home to record any quality improvement you’ve implemented as an MO CPD activity.
