Applying for the STTMS pathway

  1. Complete the online application through the RACGP website
  2. Pay the application fee in full
  3. Obtain an RACGP ID number. If you do not already have one you can sign up for free on the RACGP website

You will need to provide information regarding your personal details, your qualifications and training position.
You will also need to upload documentary evidence of your identity and qualifications. All information will be handled as per the RACGP’s Privacy Policy.

Your application will be accessible for six months from the day of payment.

It may take up to 90 minutes to complete. You can save your answers at any time and complete the application in any order.

Application process

Personal details

If you have changed your name, through marriage or otherwise, you must provide official evidence of your name change such as marriage certificate. Evidence of name change documentation must include your previous name and new name.

Curriculum Vitae

Upload a comprehensive CV on the RACGP CV template. The template is an editable PDF; save a copy onto your computer and open this saved copy to insert your details.

Your CV must outline all work and training experience since graduation (including non-medical roles) and explain any gaps in practice longer than three months (eg undertaking study, family commitments). It must be electronically signed and dated within the past three months.

Emailed and handwritten CVs will not be accepted.

Academic qualifications and EPIC verification

You need to apply for primary source verification (PSV) of your primary and if obtained, specialist general practice qualifications from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) through the Electronic Portfolio of International Credentials (EPIC) service. Step by step instructions are available on the AMC website.

In your STTMS pathway application, provide your AMC number so we can check your qualifications have been verified by EPIC. You may submit your application before EPIC verification has been completed if you have your EPIC number, however your application may not be finalised until EPIC verification is received.

If you hold a specialist qualification, you must provide a letter from the overseas specialist college or body awarding the specialist qualification confirming your specialist qualification in the country of training.

If you identify as a specialist-in-training, you must provide a letter from the overseas specialist college or body awarding the specialist qualification:

  1. confirming your trainee status with the college/body
  2. outlining the content, structure and length of the training program
  3. confirming that you are not likely to be more than two years from completing your specialist training
  4. confirming that you have passed a basic specialist examination or satisfactorily completed substantial training (generally three or more years, ie PGY 5)
  5. identifying the objectives of the short-term training to be undertaken in Australia

The letter must be written on official letterhead, signed by an appropriate representative and dated within three months of the application date.

If original documents are not in English, you must provide certified official and endorsed English translations of these documents in addition to the originals.

The training position must be an accredited training post with an accredited supervisor. You must upload a letter of offer. The letter must:

  1. be dated within the last three months and signed by the Practice Principal (preferably) or Senior Medical Director, CEO, Director, or Practice Manager
  2. be on practice letterhead
  3. state your name and position title
  4. state short-term training start and end dates
  5. state all short-term training practice locations
  6. include training position details eg the total hours worked each week, the duration of your weekly sessions (eg Monday-Friday 9:00am-12:30pm & 1:30pm-5pm and the exact nature of the work you are required to undertake with a detailed summary of the patients, presentations, management, and duties of the role
  7. confirm this is an accredited training post
  8. confirm there is an accredited supervisor who is willing to provide educational and clinical supervision allocated to the short-term training post

Training plan

You must upload a comprehensive training plan on the RACGP training plan template. The training plan will confirm:

  1. the purpose of training
  2. anticipated duration of training
  3. training location(s)
  4. content and structure of training, including details of cultural safety training to be undertaken
  5. training goals and objectives
  6. weekly timetable of clinical and educational activities
  7. anticipated dates for any examinations or assessments

Application for assessment by a medical college (AAMC-30 form)

Complete all applicant and employer/sponsor sections of the AAMC-30 form (Part A) and upload to your online application. The RACGP will review and complete Part B of the form and submit to Ahpra with a recommendation of your eligibility for the pathway and suitability for your training position. As outlined in the RACGP Short-term training in a Medical Specialty Policy, the decision to grant registration is the responsibility of the MBA.

Supervised practice plan and principal supervisor’s agreement for IMGs with limited or provisional registration (SPPA-30 form)

Complete all sections of the SPPA-30 form and upload to your online application.

Applicant declaration and translated documents

To finish your application, you’ll need to complete the RACGP Applicant Declaration and sign it in the presence of an authorised witness.

You’ll also need to get copies of the documents below verified by an authorised witness to confirm they are true copies of the originals:

  • Evidence of name change documentation (if applicable)
  • Training position letter of offer
  • All documentation from the overseas specialist college or body awarding the specialist qualification

Once these documents have been verified, the authorised witness must list them in the space provided at the bottom of the RACGP Applicant Declaration Form.

Once you have completed your application and uploaded all the required documentation, you are ready to submit your application. You will not be able to amend your application once you have submitted it.

  • If there is any part of the application you have not understood, please request clarification from the RACGP by phone on 1800 472 247 or by email to educationsupport@racgp.org.au before you submit your application.
  • You will not be able to amend the application once you have submitted it, unless RACGP staff or assessors request more information from you.
  • By submitting the application, you confirm that you have given the RACGP true, accurate and complete information. Your application will be assessed based on the information you have provided, in line with the RACGP Short-term Training in a Medical Specialty Policy.
  • If additional information or documentation is required, you will be contacted via email and provided with a link to access your application again. All the information and documents you have uploaded will be accessible in the application and you can make any necessary adjustments.
  • You must provide current, full and verifiable information in your application with sufficient detail to assess comparability
  • All documents must be in English, or be accompanied by certified official translations to English
  • The RACGP will take reasonable steps to verify the information provided; additional information or documentation may be requested to substantiate the assessment
  • Submission of plagiarised, false or misleading information will be handled as per the Academic Misconduct Policy.
