2. Policy declaration
The RACGP Practice Experience Program (PEP) has been developed to provide non-vocationally recognised doctors with a supported program grounded in individualised learning and workplace based assessment.
Participants in the Practice Experience Program may be identified as requiring remediation as detailed in this policy.
The objectives of this policy are to describe the processes by which a participant may be identified as requiring remediation.
This policy applies to all participants in the Practice Experience Program.
For the purposes of this policy:
- ME means medical educator.
- Participant means a medical practitioner enrolled in the Practice Experience Program.
- Remediation means intervention addressing clinical skills deficiencies. The intervention may include, but is not limited to: revision of the learning plan; tutorial time with a nominated ME to address knowledge deficits; case based discussion; direct observation of clinical skills; review of videorecorded consultations.
- RTO means Regional Training Organisation.
5. General principles
5.1 While remediation is not mandatory, participants are advised to undertake the prescribed program if remediation activities are recommended.
5.2 Participants who undertake remediation are required to pay for any remediation activities.
6.1 The RACGP determines whether remediation is required based on performance feedback from the Regional Training Organisation (RTO) and/or participant.
6.2 Any program of remediation is determined by the RACGP to a maximum of 26 weeks and can be undertaken a maximum of once during a participant’s time in the PEP. If remediation is undertaken, a participant’s time in the PEP will be equivalently extended up to a maximum of 26 weeks.
6.3 The program of remediation will include activities relevant to the participant’s identified learning needs.
6.4 Remediation activities may include, but are not limited to:
- Formal clinical skills assessment
- Development of a learning plan targeting the specific learning needs
Directed learning activities, including but not limited to:
- Clinical audits
- Workshop participation
- Observation and feedback with respect to clinical skills
- Case discussion
- Counselling and other advice as appropriate
- Medical educator (ME) support.
6.5 Remediation activities must be undertaken within the timeframe prescribed at the point of development of the remediation program.
6.6 The RACGP will monitor and assess the participant’s progress in the remediation program and provide participants with a performance report upon completion.
