PEP Specialist Supervisor

Supervisors provide clinical support, advice, and feedback, and play an integral role in helping the participant develop skills in a supportive environment.

Practice Experience Program Specialist (PEP SP) supervisors are experienced specialist GPs who have been approved by the Medical Board of Australia as per the Supervisor Guidelines to provide supervision. Supervisors provide clinical support, advice, and feedback, and play an integral role in helping the participant develop skills in a supportive environment allowing for a successful transition to the Australian health care system.

A PEP SP supervisor's main responsibilities are to:

  • share professional knowledge and skills
  • assist with practice clinical queries
  • orientate participants to the practice and local context
  • facilitate understanding of the Australian health care and support systems.

Supervisors are required to submit a report at intervals specified by the RACGP.

The current intervals are:

  • Three months after commencing work,
  • 12 calendar months, and
  • 24 calendar months.

Three month interval

After the participant has spent three calendar months in an approved practice, the participant and the supervisor are required to complete a Work Performance Report. The purpose of the report is to review and rate several performance criteria against the expected standard of an Australian trained GP at the point of admission to Fellowship, and to capture areas of strength and areas requiring further development.

Submitting reports

The completed report, at each interval, must be submitted to the RACGP by the participant and they can email it to pepspecialistadmin@racgp.org.au or upload it directly to the PEP SP portal.

A copy of the reports must also be sent to the Medical Board of Australia by the supervisor.

Completing a minimum of six months (full-time equivalent (FTE)) of supervised practice, and maintaining supervisory requirements until admission to Fellowship, are both FRACGP eligibility requirements.

Before a participant starts on the Partially Comparable (PC) stream, the RACGP will make a recommendation to the Medical Board of Australia regarding the required level of supervision whilst working in an approved practice. The recommended supervision level will be based on the outcome of the comparability assessment and the intended position and context of practice.

Most participants will start work in their approved practice on Level 3 supervision, this means:

  •  the participant will take primary responsibility for each individual patient
  • the participant will be permitted to work alone provided the supervisor is contactable by telephone or video link
  • the supervisor must ensure that there are mechanisms in place to monitor whether the participant is practising safely.

You can visit the Ahpra website for more information about supervision level.

As per the PEP SP Supervision Policy, the RACGP may recommend to the Medical Board of Australia that the supervision level should be changed to a lower or higher level, at any point during the participants program.
