Program time obligations

Program time obligations

The FSP is a five-year training program and includes two phases – education and consolidation. This means you’re required to complete:

  • all education and training requirements (education phase) within two calendar years from the commencement of your program
  • all requirements in the consolidation phase within three calendar years after the completion of your education phase.

While you can work part-time during the FSP, you need to complete all education and training requirements on a full-time basis. This means that you must meet all program requirements (education and consolidation phase) within five calendar years.

Full-time is defined as at least 38 hours over a minimum of four days per week. A minimum of 27 hours must be in face-to-face, rostered patient consultation time undertaking general practice activities. Work periods of less than three consecutive hours, or of less than four calendar weeks in any one practice won’t be considered. Hours worked beyond this full-time definition won’t be considered and is not recommended. Please refer to GPiT safety and wellbeing policy.

Part-time is defined as at least 14.5 hours over a minimum of two days per week, of which at least 10.5 hours is face-to-face, rostered patient consultation time undertaking general practice activities. Work periods of less than three consecutive hours or of less than four calendar weeks in any one practice won’t be considered.

What’s not included in the program time

Some types of leave are not included in the program time cap:

  • Category 1 leave – leave from the training program
  • Category 3 leave – Australian Defence Force (ADF) service leave
  • Category 4 leave – deferral of commencement of training

If any leave period exceeds the entitlement period and/or what was approved, this can affect your program time too.

Refer to the Leave policy for more information.

TIP

Approved periods of leave can affect the program end date stated in your FSP agreement. Contact the Training Programs team at fspadmin@racgp.org.au if you have concerns about your program time cap.
