FSP changes

Following consultation and review of FSP eligibility changes earlier this year, program entry changes are being introduced in phases, over two application periods, 2026.1 and 2026.2. These changes will apply for all future FSP intakes:

  • 2026.1: The training site nominated by the applicant must be accredited against the RACGP standards for general practice training before the applicant commences their first term on the program.
  • 2026.2: FSP applicants are required to sit the national entry assessment. Find out more below.

To support your progress towards Fellowship, the FSP consists of two phases:

  1. Education and training phase – a 24-month program (four terms of 26 weeks) where you receive education and support to prepare for Fellowship exams.
  2. Consolidation phase - up to 36 months where you sit your Fellowship exams. The duration of this phase may vary depending on whether you have previously sat an RACGP Fellowship exam.

During your training, you’ll receive:

  • Workplace-based assessments and learning activities to inform training and progress towards Fellowship.
  • Regular case-review and supervision by accredited supervisors.
  • Individualised support from a Program Officer and Medical Educator.
  • Small group learning opportunities.
  • Access to the RACGP curriculum-based education modules and focused exam preparation resources.

Applications for the FSP open bi-annually with two intakes per year.

Find out more in the FSP Applicant Handbook.

Applicant resources

To help you prepare for your FSP application and the national selection assessment, we recommend the following resources:

We’re here to help

If you have any questions or require assistance, please contact our team at becomeagp@racgp.org.au or call 1800 472 247.

From the 2026.2 intake onwards, all FSP applicants will be required to complete the national entry assessment.

This aligns FSP with the Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) Program, which already includes this assessment as part of its entry process.

The national entry assessment is an online situational judgment test designed to evaluate your ability to reflect on and respond to interpersonal and professional dilemmas using critical reasoning and social interpretation.

Your performance in this assessment will help determine your suitability for entry into the program.

Please note:

  • You can only sit the assessment once per calendar year (1 January – 31 December).
  • Your result will apply to any RACGP training program application (FSP or AGPT) made during that calendar year. If your performance is below the minimum standard, you won’t be able to make any further applications in that calendar year to any RACGP training program.
  • Assessment outcomes are valid only for the calendar year in which you first applied.

Find out more about the national entry assessment including how to prepare.

  • As FSP is a rural training program, you’re required to work in MM 2-7 locations. In rare circumstances, a placement in an MM 1 area may be considered through the Extenuating and Unforeseen Circumstances (EUC) process. If you're applying for the FSP and believe this applies to you, you'll be able to submit an EUC application as part of your program application.
  • Your placements must be in a training site that is currently accredited to train AGPT or FSP registrars under the RACGP Standards for general practice training 4th edition.
  • A list of currently accredited training sites will be available from this webpage in late November 2025.
  • Supervision is an important part of the FSP. Your nominated supervisor must be accredited with the RACGP prior to program commencement. If they’re not accredited, they must be working in the nominated accredited training facility, have at least four years of experience in comprehensive general practice and submit an Expression of Interest to become accredited by the FSP application closing date.
  • Onsite supervision is the preferred model of supervision. Applications for remote supervision are required to meet separate eligibility criteria as outlined in the Remote Supervision Pack. Approval of remote supervision is on a case-by-case basis and at the RACGP’s discretion.
  • Further information can be found in the FSP Training site and supervisor handbook.

To support your progress towards Fellowship, you’ll will receive:

  • Workplace-based assessments and learning activities to inform training and progress towards Fellowship.
  • Regular case-review and supervision by accredited supervisors.
  • Individualised support from a Program Officer and Medical Educator.
  • Small group learning opportunities.
  • Access to the RACGP curriculum-based education modules and focused exam preparation resources.
