Australian Bureau of Statistics data indicates that in 2014:
- 2864 lives were lost by suicide
- 65,000 suicide attempts were made.4
This data equates to approximately eight people per day, and over 50 people per week taking their life. Suicide prevention is, therefore, a key government and community initiative with GPs playing an important role in working to identify people at risk of suicide; ensuring they get the right help at the right time.
