How to become a remote supervisor

To work as a remote supervisor, you will need to be accredited as a remote supervisor. In addition to meeting the regular RACGP supervisor accreditation requirements, a remote supervisor is required to have:

  • Experience and competence as a supervisor
  • The availability and ability to travel to the remote location
  • Previous working experience in the remote location or similar
  • Ability to use practice software and manage IT connectivity
  • Creativity and commitment to provide high level remote support
  • Completion of the remote supervision online module

Remote supervisors can choose to be involved as a primary or secondary supervisor and/or be part of the RACGP remote supervisor pool to provide leave cover or temporary supervision when a primary on-site or remote supervisor is unavailable.

How to become a new remote supervision training site

This is a location with a need for a GP, and a clear desire from the community for someone to fill this role.  In addition to meeting the regular training site requirements, a remote training site requirements include:

  • No (or limited) onsite accredited supervisor
  • Willingness to engage a GP registrar and to provide cultural support
  • Adequate consulting space and equipment
  • Suitable and safe housing
  • Good reliable IT connectivity
  • A willingness to establish an onsite supervision team

Please view the remote supervision training site requirements document for the complete list of accreditation requirements.

How to become a remotely supervised registrar

Remote supervision enables a supported and safe training term in a location that would not normally be available for the registrar.  It can provide a greater engagement with a supervisor than a normal traditional term late in the training period.  Requirements for a registrar to undertake a remotely supervised term include:

  • GPT 2+ with the appropriate skill level, competence, and experience to work in the chosen location
  • Willingness to work remotely in a team environment within the constraints of the location
  • Attributes such as awareness of personal limitations, ability to utilise feedback, good communication skills etc.
  • Ability and willingness to use IT resources to enable remote support
Email your interest to our remote supervision team or speak with your local medical educator or training coordinator about opportunities.
