Registrars must check their suitability with their senior medical educator and training coordinator. You will be required to submit a signed endorsement form from your training team as part of your application. To be eligible, you must be enrolled in the AGPT Program, have completed at least GPT1 and have at least 6 months FTE of core vocational training remaining before commencing the post.

• Three specialised academic posts are available for registrars looking to develop specific skills.  Australian Journal of General Practice (AJGP) Editorial Fellow academic post – a training term that includes a position at the AJGP as an editorial Fellow. 
• The Australian Indigenous Doctors’ Association (AIDA) academic post – an identified training term for an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander registrar to undertake teaching and research aimed at improving the health and life outcomes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. 
• The PhD academic post – a training term for registrars who have been accepted for a PhD or who have provided a detailed formal PhD plan in their application. 

Registrars must develop a research proposal as part of their application form, in collaboration with a supervisor from a University Department of General Practice, rural clinical school or equivalent.

Once you’ve completed the research proposal and application form, your medical educator and university supervisor will sign declarations advising they support the project. Please allow at least one week for their review.

We encourage registrars to start their applications early. The application form can be downloaded before the application period opens, giving you additional time to look at the requirements and get started on your research proposal.
