This notice is to advise that the RACGP has updated the AGPT Registrar Training Handbook. The handbook will come into immediate effect, superseding the previous corresponding policies as of Monday, 15 December 2025.

What has changed?

  • Updated for accuracy

Ahpra medical registration

  • Added that medical indemnity is required for registration and to discuss prolonged leave periods with their medical defence organisation.

Assessment of readiness for general practice

RPLE for emergency medicine experience

  • Wording updated for clarity.

Extended skills training

  • Updated to align with the Extended skills training accreditation guide and for clarity (table inserted on the total number of min weekly working hours for extended skills)

In-practice education

  • Added information on the ReCEnT project

Out-or-practice education

  • Added ‘at least nine hours of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural training’ for clarity
  • Section on ‘self-directed learning’ updated for clarity and accuracy

Program time

  • Wording updated for accuracy and clarity.
  • Definitions for full-time and part-time training updated for clarity (adding that ‘If you’re working part time in two training sites, the minimum part-time hours must be met in each training site) and links added to replace repetition (in the sections in the handbook on ‘General practice training’ and in ‘Extended skills training’)

Rural generalist training

  • ‘Small town rural general practice’ added to the table

Core emergency medicine training

  • Wording updated for accuracy

Placement considerations

  • New section added on ‘Telehealth’

Your consulting rooms and equipment (new section)

  • New section added in ‘Preparing for a placement’ to give information on the equipment that should be provided in the training site.

Exam eligibility

  • Wording updated for accuracy, referring to the Fellowship Exams policy instead of referring to ‘an exemption’ (as this is stated in policy and so it isn’t an exemption)
  • Wording updated for clarity in the section on ‘Sitting exams while on approved leave’

Adverse Events (including critical incidents)

  • Wording revised for clarity and definition of a critical incident removed (to avoid confusion with the definition of an adverse event)

Educational Support

  • Wording and diagram updated as per the recent update to the Registrar Support and Remediation Policy (‘and’ changed to ‘or’ to clarify when remediation is available)
  • Section on ‘Remediation’ re-ordered for clarity (from general to specific)

Applying for remediation

  • Wording updated for clarity and for consistency with the section on ‘Sitting exams while on remediation’

Support for professional issues

  • Added ‘Some legal matters may need to be reported to Ahpra…’

Negotiated study leave

  • Wording changed from ‘three days…per exam semester’ to ‘six days… per year’, removed the requirement to ‘sit at least one examination in that semester’ and added link to the GP Training Incentives Payments webpage

Leave and membership fees

  • Added information specific to category 4 leave (ie the membership fee

waiver doesn’t apply)

Returning from leave

  • Added reference to the ‘return to training medical clearance’

Training transfers

  • Updated for accuracy (deleted reference to ‘rural generalist’ as this is not considered a transfer)

Transfer between training colleges

  • Added reference to the ‘AGPT Program Inter-College Transfer application’
  • Updated wording for clarity, replacing the reference to the exemption with a link to the policy

Re-entry

  • Added for clarity that ‘Re-entry is at the discretion of the censor’
