2. Policy declaration

The RACGP Practice Experience Program – Standard Stream (PEP Standard) has been developed to provide non-vocationally recognised doctors with a route to Fellowship grounded in individualised learning and workplace based assessment.

Participants in the PEP Standard may be identified as requiring remediation as detailed in this policy.

3. Objective and scope

3.1 Objective

The objectives of this policy are to describe the processes by which a participant may be identified as requiring remediation.

3.2 Scope

This policy applies to all participants in the PEP Standard.

4. Definitions

For the purposes of this policy:

1. ME means medical educator.
2. Participant means a medical practitioner enrolled in the PEP Standard.
3. Remediation means intervention addressing clinical skills deficiencies.
4. TO means Training Organisation.

5. General principles

5.1 While remediation is not mandatory, participants are advised to undertake the prescribed program if remediation activities are recommended.

5.2 Participants who undertake remediation are required to pay for any remediation activities.

6. Remediation program

6.1 The RACGP determines whether remediation is required based on performance feedback from the Training Organisation (TO) and/or participant.

6.2 Program duration

1. Any program of remediation is determined by the RACGP to a maximum of 26 weeks and can be undertaken a maximum of once during a participant’s time in the PEP.
2. If remediation is undertaken, a participant’s time in the PEP will be equivalently extended up to a maximum of 26 weeks.
3. Experience in general practice gained during periods of remediation will count towards exam eligibility and Fellowship experience requirements, but will not count towards program time.
4. Participants must not change practice during periods of remediation.

6.3 Program activities

1. The program of remediation will include activities relevant to the participant’s identified learning needs.
2. Remediation activities may include, but are not limited to:
   1. Formal clinical skills assessment
   2. Development of a learning plan targeting the specific learning needs
      Directed learning activities, including but not limited to:
      1. Clinical audits
      2. Workshop participation
      3. Observation and feedback with respect to clinical skills
      4. Case discussion
   3. Counselling and other advice as appropriate

6.4 Remediation activities must be undertaken within the timeframe prescribed at the point of development of the remediation program. The RACGP will monitor and assess the participant’s progress in the remediation program and provide participants and the relevant TO with a performance report upon completion.

7. Reconsideration

If a participant believes that a decision regarding their remediation program or performance has been made incorrectly, they may apply for reconsideration in line with the RACGP Reconsiderations and Appeals Policy.

An application for reconsideration must be submitted to the RACGP within ten national office business days of the date of the original decision.
