New South Wales is distinguished by its coastal cities, surfing beaches and national parks. Its capital city, Sydney, is home to iconic Australian landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge and a thriving business and entertainment districts. Among its natural wonders are the Blue Mountains, rainforests, rock formations and caves. It is home to heritage-listed mining villages, opal mining fields and many wineries. NSW and ACT has three training regions, each with their own subregions. Registrars can choose to train on a rural or general pathway and can elect to further their knowledge in various specialisations such as Aboriginal health.

The Western NSW and ACT training region is known for its diversity, encompassing our nation’s capital, Canberra, as well as large regional centres such as Wagga Wagga, Dubbo, Orange, Broken Hill and smaller rural communities. Within the Western NSW and ACT training region there are two subregions offering a variety of pathways:

Western NSW is a diverse region, home to outback adventure, spectacular mountain scenery, historic townships, and celebrations of arts and culture. The sub-region is brimming with GP training opportunities, with options to sub-specialise in adult internal medicine, anaesthetics, emergency medicine, mental health, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, palliative care and surgery. Training opportunities are also available in community general practices, Aboriginal community-controlled health services, as well as academic GP opportunities.
Home to our nation’s capital, Canberra, the Murrumbidgee and ACT subregion features an amazing array of food trails, natural wonders and charming towns just waiting to be explored.
The Lower Eastern NSW training region encompasses Sydney’s CBD in the north, stretching down to the Victorian border in the south. Extending into South Western Sydney, the South Coast and Snowy Mountains, the region offers a diverse range of clinical training opportunities. There are two subregions in Lower Eastern NSW:
In this subregion, you will benefit from training across diverse communities and settings. The Central, Eastern and South Western Sydney extends from Sydney’s eastern suburbs, down to the Sutherland Shire and southwest to Campbelltown and Camden.
The South Eastern NSW region stretches from the Illawarra and Southern Highlands to the Bega Valley and Snowy Mountains. This large, diverse region is filled with breathtaking rural landscapes from magnificent beaches, agricultural terrains and picturesque mountain ranges. Registrars can choose between rural and general pathway opportunities while trainng in South Eastern NSW.
The North Eastern training region extends from the NSW-QLD border to Sydney Harbour and the Parramatta River and encompasses the spectacular North Coast and scenic New England/Northwest. There are four subregions in North Eastern NSW:
The New England/Northwest subregion spans from the QLD-NSW border in the north to the town of Quirindi in the south. With world heritage listed rainforests along the Great Dividing Range to agricultural plains, New England/North West is one of the most dynamic and diverse sub-regions of NSW.
Registrars can pursue rural generalist pathways in this region, with employment opportunities in anaesthetics, emergency medicine, mental health, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics and palliative care.
The Nepean, Western and Northern Sydney subregion includes the area from Sydney's coastal northern suburbs to the western suburbs around Penrith. From magnificent world-famous beaches to the Blue Mountains, enjoy the city lifestyle with convenient access and opportunities to escape into nature.
GPs in training have the opportunities to a to train in a general pathway, train in Aboriginal health training facilities and sub-specialise in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health.
The Hunter, Manning and Central Coast subregion runs along the coast, from Sydney to Forster and inland to Scone.
This wine subregion is home to Australia’s oldest vineyards. Beyond indulging in the wineries, popular leisure activities include surfing, swimming, fishing and boating in the Hunter, Manning and Central Coast’s beaches, and visiting its many national parks for hiking and outdoor activities.
GPs can train in a rural setting in this region and experience the diversity of rural general practice knowledge .
The north Coast subregion spans the coast from the QLD-NSW border to Port Macquarie. This scenic subregion is known for its beautiful beaches, laidback lifestyle and pleasant climate. Discover stunning beaches, rivers and rainforests. Go fishing, hiking, surfing and camping. Road trip to the coast to surf Australia's mosst eastern point in Byron Bay. Registrars in the North Coast can train in rural settings, building experience with varied patients with different and diverse presentations, while supported by a local GP supervisor.
