Preference change period

Learn about how you can change your training pathway and region preferences.

Last updated 29 April 2026

If you’ve applied to the AGPT Program and your application is deemed eligible, you’ll be invited to participate in the preference change and booking period where you can:

  • book your National Entry Assessment (if you haven’t already sat this within the calendar year)
  • review and (optionally) update your training region and pathway preferences
  • view other applicant preferences.

During the designated preference change period, you can log into your MyApplication portal and view the distribution matrix. The distribution matrix shows:

  • how many places are available for each training pathway and region/subregion
  •  how many applicants have preferenced each training pathway and region/subregion.

The distribution matrix will update and change as applicants update their preferences throughout the preference change and booking window.

  • Changing your preferences during the preference change window is optional.
  • You’re encouraged to check your preferences are correct as you can only change your preferences only during the preference change period. No changes can be made once the deadline has passed.
  • Listing the same training pathway and region/subregion more than once does not increase your chances of receiving an offer for that location.
  • Offers are determined by multiple factors, including:
    • the number of training places available
    • your preferences and those of other applicants
    • the priority preferencing framework
    • your National Entry Assessment outcome.

  • Only preference locations where you can meet the training location requirements. These are explained in the 2027 AGPT Program Guide and in the Training Location Requirements Schedule.
  • Training location requirements and maps may change; we’ll provide as much notice as possible if this occurs.
  • If you train rurally, you’re expected to live in the rural area where you undertake your general practice placements.
  • While there is sufficient training capacity nationally, placement availability varies by location, and opportunities may be limited in highly preferred areas.
  • We’ll make every effort to place registrars who meet the requirements into a general practice placement in Semester 1, 2027. However, this may not be possible for all registrars. As we continue to expand training capacity, some registrars may commence their general practice term in Semester 2, 2027 or Semester 1, 2028. Please note – the AGPT Program can be commenced in a hospital-based setting and leave options (such as up to 26 weeks deferral) are available as per the Program Leave Policy
  • Placements in MM2–7 locations that are commutable to major cities are very limited and highly competitive. To avoid disappointment, you should not expect to secure a commutable rural placement.
  • You’re required to maintain a valid visa for the duration of training and meet all visa and training requirements. If you’re unable to do so, you may be withdrawn from training.
  • If your visa requires employer sponsorship, you’re responsible for securing this at an approved training site and meeting location requirements. The RACGP and Department of Health, Disability and Ageing cannot sponsor or arrange sponsorship.
  • Visa sponsorship requirements may delay commencement of a community‑based general practice term, as sponsoring sites are limited and sponsorship processes take time.
  • If your visa requires you to work in a specific state/territory, only preference regions/subregions within that state/territory.
  • If offered a training place, you must obtain Australian citizenship, Australian permanent residency or New Zealand citizenship by the end of training to be eligible for Fellowship. If unsure about your residency status, seek advice early to avoid disruption.
  • We recognise that circumstances may arise that require a registrar to transfer between training regions or pathways, this includes requests for composite pathway rural rotation exemptions. Registrars are not automatically entitled to a transfer, and a transfer must not compromise the registrar’s training and workforce obligations. We’ll provide individual case management support to registrars who request a transfer to optimise the outcome for them, whether the request to transfer is granted or denied.
  • Transfers are not permissible in the first six months of training unless unforeseen and exceptional circumstances arise after offer acceptance.
  • Further information is available in the Training Program Requirements Policy and Training Transfer Policy.
