RACGP CCE examiners

Completing the RACGP Fellowship exams is an important milestone towards a career in general practice. RACGP exams assess competence to practice as an unsupervised and specialist general practitioner anywhere in Australia and are a pathway to Fellowship of the RACGP (FRACGP).  

CCE examiners are pivotal to the ongoing development and success of the Fellowship exams and consequently the award of FRACGP. 

Becoming a CCE examiner provides the opportunity for RACGP Fellows to contribute to the positive development of their profession, utilising their vast knowledge for the benefit of Australian general practice. CCE examiners are engaged by the RACGP and work with their peers to test candidate knowledge and proficiency in an exam setting.  

RACGP CCE examiners become qualified through training and, as a group, they help to maintain the high standard of the RACGP exams. RACGP examiners are active in Australian general practice and have first-hand knowledge of the nature and culture within it. Their contribution is highly valued and ensures RACGP exams remain valid and relevant to a continually evolving general practice environment. 

CCE examiners must maintain membership of the RACGP whilst working in this capacity. 

The role of a CCE examiner

CCE examiners utilise their knowledge and skills by: 

  • Assessing the knowledge and proficiency of candidates at the RACGP Clinical Competency Exam (CCE). 
  • ​Exercising expertise while working alongside peers to assess the competency of candidates in test conditions. 

CCE examiners are required to: 

  • familiarise themselves with the examiner guidelines and technical guide for the CCE 
  • attend and complete training and the online gplearning module 
  • participate in case standardisation meetings for each case assigned 
  • study the case materials provided including supplementary notes to ensure a full understanding of the competencies candidates will be marked on 
  • follow procedures for the exam day including arriving at the required time, following administrator instructions and reporting any technical or other incidents immediately 
  • conduct each candidate’s case according to instructions given, including sharing the case materials PDF via Zoom screen share, giving remote control to each candidate, managing the time for each candidate, asking the exam questions as instructed and marking each candidate online in the allotted time. 

Reasons to be involved

Contributing to the RACGP exams is a valuable accomplishment for a Fellow of the RACGP (FRACGP). In addition, CCE examiners: 

  • receive educational opportunities to ensure they have up-to-date medical knowledge 
  • receive remuneration and CPD hours for accredited CCE examiner activities 
  • experience a high level of collegiality and professional pride. 

Interested in becoming a CCE examiner?

You must fulfil these criteria to apply: 

  • hold current financial membership of the RACGP 
  • hold Fellowship of the RACGP (three or more years)    
  • be in good standing with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) 
  • hold current, unrestricted and unconditional Ahpra specialist medical registration 
  • be CPD compliant 
  • be comfortable with online exam format: competent using technology (email, downloading documents, using web portals) and familiar with Zoom and its functions (including video conferencing, screen sharing, giving remote control, renaming yourself, adjusting audio (microphone) and video (camera) settings, troubleshooting minor issues), or willing to undertake self-learning to gain competency in Zoom. 
  • declare any conflicts of interest. 

Experience in medical education, training or assessment is preferred.
