Selection Assessment
The RACGP selection processes utilises situational judgement tests to assess professionalism, communication skills and decision-making abilities.1
Workplace-based Assessment Program
The RACGP has a program of workplace-based assessments (WBA) that includes the assessment tools of:
- Early Assessment for Safety and Learning (EASL)
- Mini-clinical evaluation exercise (Mini-CEX)
- Multi-Source Feedback (MSF)
- Random Case Analysis
The data collected in the WBA is shared with the registrar, in-practice supervisors and medical educators. It enables identification of learning needs and performance in practice and informs the development of individual support strategies, including for registrars who are struggling. This data can also be used to inform progression decisions.
Fellowship exams
The Applied Knowledge Test (AKT) is designed to test the application of clinical knowledge across the full breadth of the RACGP curriculum. It consists of single best answer multiple-choice questions. All questions are presented in a clinical vignette format, designed to reflect real-life scenarios encountered in general practice.
The Key Features Problem (KFP) exam is a written exam that assesses clinical reasoning and decision-making. Each question consists of a clinical case scenario and question which focuses on critical steps required to resolve a clinical problem. The scenarios cover a broad range of patient demographics and the breadth of the curriculum.
The Clinical Competency Exam (CCE) assesses a range of clinical competencies over the breadth of the curriculum via a case discussion where an assessor interrogates a candidate’s clinical reasoning based on the clinical vignette, or via a clinical encounter where the assessor observes a clinical interaction between the candidate and a standardised patient presenting with a clinical scenario.
Recognition of Extended Skills for Fellows of the RACGP (RES-FRACGP)
The RES-FRACGP provides a formal mechanism for recognition of Fellows of the College with extended skills in a prescribed area and articulates a pathway for Fellows who want to pursue extended skills in order to obtain Recognition.
The assessment process utilises a portfolio of evidence which includes work history, education and continuing professional development (CPD) activities, short answer questions and case studies.
Pre-Employment Structured Clinical Interview (PESCI)
The RACGP is one of the providers accredited by the Australian Medical Council (AMC) to conduct PESCI assessments which are interviews using a structured set of questions and scenarios which are tailored to the specific requirements of the position in which the doctor is seeking to work. The PESCI outcome is provided to Ahpra and contributes to their final decision on suitability to practise.2
