Rural Generalist Fellowship Outcomes


Doctors wishing to subspecialise in rural generalist medicine can complete the FRACGP-RG. The Fellowship Outcomes of the FRACGP-RG is the standard to be expected of a subspecialist in rural generalist medicine. It is recognised that that many subspecialists in rural generalist medicine will have expertise that are more advanced in some areas that they utilise in their work, and different advanced and non-GP specialist skills

The FRACGP-RG is able to:

  • Integrate in-depth knowledge of the remote or rural community when providing comprehensive general practice care
  • Provide emergency care
  • Utilise specialised procedural and/or non-procedural skills
  • Manage available resources in the remote or rural context to optimise health care
  • Provide advocacy leadership for a remote or rural community in achieving equitable access to resources
  • Navigate the tensions of living and working as a GP within the one community
  • Understand and use relevant population and environmental data to build a healthy remote or rural community

As well as all of the Fellowship Outcomes of the RACGP.

This means that the FRACGP who is also a FRACGP-RG is able to:

Communicator

  • Communicate effectively with patients and families
  • Practice culturally respectful, responsive and safe communication
  • Communicate relevant information efficiently to others involved in a patient’s care

Clinician

  • Provide person-centred and comprehensive care, using a biopsychosocial approach
  • Integrate in-depth knowledge of the remote or rural community when providing comprehensive general practice care
  • Conduct consultations to effectively facilitate care
  • Apply expert medical knowledge and skills in assessing and diagnosing conditions
  • Manage the full range of presentations including providing first contact access
  • Provide emergency care
  • Utilise specialised procedural and/or non-procedural skills
  • Manage uncertainty and undifferentiated presentations
  • Promote health and deliver preventive care
  • Manage available resources in the remote or rural context to optimise health care

Health advocate and leader

  • Advocate for access to care
  • Provide advocacy leadership for a remote or rural community in achieving equitable access to resources
  • Coordinate care and lead healthcare teams
  • Responsibly steward healthcare system utilisation
  • Promote practice quality, safety and viability

Professional

  • Behave in a professional and ethical way
  • Practice self-care
  • Navigate the tensions of living and working as a GP within the one community
  • Engage in reflective practice and ongoing learning
  • Understand own professional competency
  • Meet legal and duty of care responsibilities

Scientist, educator, and researcher

  • Integrate best available scientific evidence into practice
  • Support learning and improvement through education, mentoring, and engagement with research
  • Understand and use relevant population and environmental data to build a healthy remote or rural community
