General practice can play a critical role in preventing, recognising and managing elder abuse and neglect.
GPs are often the first independent professional to see an elderly victim of abuse. However, a lack of awareness of elder abuse as well as GP time constraints can hinder a GP’s effectiveness in identifying and addressing cases of abuse. The victim’s potential reluctance to raise the issue can add to the challenge of detecting abuse is occurring.
In this webinar, Dr Libby Hindmarsh and Prof Sue Kurrle discuss the various ways elder abuse can present in general practice. The webinar explores ways to effectively recognise and respond to risk factors and signs that your patient may be suffering abuse. Libby and Sue shed light on some interesting GP case studies to illustrate a whole of practice approach to managing different forms of elder abuse.
