152038 - SafeScript - Real Time Prescription Monitoring for Controlled Drugs

SafeScript is computer software that allows prescription records for certain high-risk medicines to be transmitted in real-time to a centralised database which can then be accessed by doctors (or nurse practitioners) and pharmacists during a consultation.

From April 2020 it will be mandatory in Victoria for all prescribers and pharmacists to check SafeScript prior to writing or dispensing a prescription for a high-risk medicine. There is a view to roll out SafeScript nationally.

This webinar is designed to assist GPs understand SafeScript and their future obligations regarding its use.

Relevance to General Practice

The Drugs, Poisons and Controlled Substances Amendment (Real-time Prescription Monitoring) Act 2017, which enabled the implementation of SafeScript, came into operation on 2 July 2018.

This act places obligations on all GPs who prescribing high-risk medications. From April 2020 it will be mandatory in Victoria for all prescribers and pharmacists to check SafeScript prior to writing or dispensing a prescription for such medications.

Checking of SafeScript information enables GPs and other prescribers and dispenses to make safer clinical decisions and patients may be receiving high-risk medications beyond medical needs.
