106490 - Food as Medicine: Food and our Genome

To update GP's and practice staff on the challenges and complexities of weight management. This module will take a case based approach to exploring difficult yet important conversations about weight and weight management.

Relevance to General Practice

An increasing number of Australians are seeking to learn information contained in their genes to help guide decisions on their health. Some individuals may seek these tests without the advice of a medical professional and then may present to GPs with results seeking medical and nutrition advice. It is important that GPs, have the knowledge and the skills to interpret these results and provide evidenced based advice. In Australia, there are a number of genes available for testing listed on the RCPA catalogue of Genetic Tests and Laboratories, such as MTHFR, DHCR7, APOE and APOB (4). While these genes are listed to be available for testing in regards to association with medical conditions such as Hypobetalipoproteinemia for APOB, these genes may also contain gene-nutrient polymorphisms which may be associated with nutrient metabolism, such as vitamin D metabolism and DHCR7. Doctors with access to ordering these genetic tests must have sufficient knowledge to be able to advise patients.

  1. Describe the main factors of the human genome and how genetics can affect nutritional requirements
  2. Explain and provide examples of how nutrients can affect the activity of genes
  3. List ethical, legal and social issues associated with nutrigenetic testing and discuss how these may affect healthcare practice
  4. Discuss with patients in basic terms how food, nutrition, genes and health interact
  5. Use NHMRC "Discussing Direct-to-Consumer Genetic DNA Testing..." document to identify situations where gene testing may/may not be appropriate in the GP setting
