116909 - IMED7010 Foundation Therapeutics. UQ Skin Cancer Program

The focus of this course is two-fold. Students will gain a sound knowledge of (i) medical and surgical treatments as it applies to the majority of primary skin cancer presentations (including medications, cryotherapy, curettage, biopsy techniques and excision of skin lesions with direct repair); (ii) the therapeutic relationship (including educating patients about skin cancer, and knowing when to refer cases to ensure appropriate patient care.

Learning outcomes

  1. Apply current evidence-based best practice to ensure safe and effective patient diagnosis and management.
  2. Outline therapeutic strategies for managing patients with skin cancer.
  3. Confidently describe different skin biopsy techniques.
  4. Demonstrate adherence to relevant standards of ethical, legal and professional behaviour when interacting with patients and colleagues.
  5. Compare pathology results with observed dermatoscopic features to identify those patients who require follow-up or referral to a specialist.
