Our innovative Psychiatric Medicine higher education program is designed to enable doctors to access evidence based innovative learning.
This contemporary recovery-oriented program has been designed to meet the needs of three distinct groups: Psychiatrists; General Practitioners; Rural and Remote Medicine specialists. We offer flexible adult education learning options both face to face and online.

Relevance to General Practice
It is estimated that almost half of the Australian population (45%) will experience a common mental illness in their lifetime, with around 20% affected in the past 12 months. In data from the Bettering the Evaluation and Care of Health (BEACH) survey, General Practitioners (GPs) in 2014-2015 provided services for 85% of the Australian population. Of that, almost 13% of all general practice encounters reported were mental health related. However, despite this, we also recognise that people experiencing mental health issues can regularly struggle with access to appropriate health care, or to be treated with respect and dignity when they do access health care services. The 2014 NSW Mental Health Commission Living Well Plan recommends increasing the capacity of services to respond. The Psychiatric Medicine Graduate Certificate aims to develop advanced mental health assessment and management, and thus improve capacity to provide effective care, in a recovery focused model.
- Demonstrate how the CanMED range of medical competencies can support recovery journeys of people with mental illness within the student’s breadth of practice
- Construct, perform and report on culturally appropriate biopsychosocial formulations, diagnoses and differential diagnoses
- Develop collaborative management plans to facilitate clinical and personal recovery in people with mental health problems of severe intensity
- Demonstrate understanding of the principles of interprofessional practice.
