An audit which will enable participating Referring Doctors to compare their provisional diagnoses with the histological diagnoses of skin lesions with their peers in a confidential audit. The information is to be presented in tables and graphically by gathering statistical information supplied from both the Referrer and all registered participants. The statistical information is to then be utilised by the registered participants as a tool to improve their diagnostic assessment of skin lesions, in order to improve the quality of care provided to their patients.
The GP will be required to provide a provisional diagnosis when submitting the patient's specimen(s) for histological diagnosis. The provisional diagnosis will be correlated with the histological diagnosis and feedback will be provided to the GP.
Relevance to General Practice
Australia has among the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. About two in three Australians will be diagnosed with some form of skin cancer before the age of 70.
Basal Cell Carcinoma and Squamous Cell Carcinoma are the most common types of non-melanoma skin cancer. In Australia, over 750,000 new cases of Basal Cell Carcinoma are diagnosed and treated each year.

- Enable the participant to more confidently investigate, diagnose, excise and properly treat all forms of skin lesions in the practice environment.
- Enable the participant to recognise when to refer a specimen for pathology.
- Help the participant discuss skin lesions with patients.
- Allow the participant involvement in data collection and analysis.
- Encourage the participant to implement regular Skin checks for patients.
