The Asthma Device Evaluation of Proficiency and Technique (ADEPT) Active Learning Module assists GPs in the assessment of inhaler technique and suitability for asthma patients and provides an opportunity to discuss the importance of good asthma control and the role correct inhaler technique plays.
Participating GPs are required to review evidenced based reading material related to inhaler technique. A minimum of 10 inhaler technique assessments of adult patients with asthma must be conducted utilising device specific checklists from the National Asthma Council.
The majority of patients do not use their inhaler devices correctly. Poor asthma control and poor response to treatment can be considered a direct result of poor inhaler technique. Initial and routine inhaler technique training is important and facilitates improved patient outcomes.
Relevance to General Practice
There is much evidence to support that patients’ inhaler technique can be improved by education from a health care professional and that, in asthma, interventions to correct inhaler technique have been shown to improve asthma control.
GPs play a significant role in educating patients on how to use their inhaler device properly. Incorrect technique when taking inhaled medications frequently prevents patients with asthma from receiving the maximal benefit from their medications.
