Activity description

81082 - IUD Insertion Training

True Relationships and Reproductive Health

IUD insertion training provides doctors with supervised clinical training for the insertion of copper and progestogen bearing IUDs.

Relevance to General Practice

Due to high demand for IUD insertions, women can experience long waiting times. To offer women more options FPQ deliver training to GPs throughout Qld, which results in more trained doctors able to provide IUDs and also reduces the impact on O&G departments. Having more trained GPs also widens, and provides more timely, access to long acting reversible contraceptive care and therefore potentially reduces the number of unplanned pregnacies.

Learning outcomes

  1. Review emergency equipment and protocols in own practice including management of complications and standardised use of check lists and consent forms
  2. Describe the differences, advantages and disadvantages between copper and hormonal IUDs
  3. Demonstrate a commitment to standardized assessment, counselling and consent prior to IUD insertion
