191336 - Emergency Bedside Ultrasound Course

The Bedside Emergency Ultrasound course provides a practical introduction to operating an ultrasound machine. The program comprises of a two day small group workshop with hands on training in the areas of: knobology, ultrasound of the abdominal aorta, FAST examination, lung ultrasound, RUSH, DVT, basic echocardiography and guided procedures.

Relevance to General Practice

Metropolitan GPs and especially Rural GPs providing emergency services for a local hospital will inevitably encounter patients who need to have emergency ultrasounds. Regular updates are essential for maintaining the important clinical skill sets and critical thinking to provide the highest standard of critical care at the earliest possible opportunity. The Bedside Emergency Ultrasound course will focus on emergency topics that present in rural GP settings. The content of each workshop builds on existing knowledge and clinical skill, refreshes less commonly used skills, and allows a platform to further develop team performance in emergency and critical care

Learning outcomes

  1. Structure the steps for preparing the patient and equipment to perform bedside emergency ultrasound
  2. Differentiate the ultrasound anatomy and procedure for imaging of the abdominal aorta using beside ultrasound
  3. Explain the views, ultrasound anatomy and pathological findings for the FAST and eFAST examination in the trauma patient
  4. Discriminate the components of the RUSH - Rapid Ultrasound in Shock Protocol for ultrasound imaging of the patient in shock
  5. Differentiate the ultrasound anatomy and procedure for imaging of the great veins of the lower limb for DVT and IVC for the assessment of circulating volume
