CPD requirements for registered medical practitioners (unless exempt)

The Medical Board of Australia (MBA) Registration standard: Continuing professional development, sets out the CPD requirements for all medical practitioners with practising Australian registration (unless exempt). And requires that practitioners:

Have a CPD home

Complete a professional development plan (PDP) annually

Record a minimum of 50 hours of CPD annually

Each calendar year you will need to record 50 hours of CPD across different types. There are some required CPD activity types, but also flexibility in how you make up some of your hours.

Complete CPD activities related to the program-level requirements (PLRs)

Complete a CPR course once within the triennium (specialist GPs)

Specialist GPs must complete a CPR course at least once per triennium, e.g. once in the 2026-28 triennium. The RACGP will also accept basic life support (BLS) and advanced life support (ALS) courses that include CPR and meets the Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines or the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR). The Medical Board of Australia has determined that all CPR courses will only be eligible for hours under the Educational Activities CPD type.

Retain records for audit

Retain records of annual CPD activity for audit by your CPD home and the Medical Board of Australia for three years after the end of each one-year CPD cycle. See evidence guide here.
