The RACGP thanks the Legal and Constitutional Affairs References Committee for the invitation to respond to the Senate enquiry into the illegal tobacco crisis in Australia. Illegal tobacco products impact public health, community safety, and primary care. The RACGP support increased efforts to reduce black market tobacco sales and calls for regulatory reform. Greater investment is needed to fund public health education programs, GP-led smoking cessation and nicotine addiction programs as well as greater support through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme for first-line smoking cessation therapies, particularly combination therapies and longer duration treatment.
