In 2019, Australia's life insurance industry introduced a partial moratorium on the requirement to disclose genetic test results. There are concerns that the industry-led partial moratorium is failing, and the issue continues to discourage consumers from participating in both established clinical genetic testing, which may identify a need for potentially life-saving treatment, and medical research involving genetic testing.
The RACGP's response supports the proposed Option 2: Legislating a ban, where the Government would legislate a total or partial prohibition on the use of adverse genetic testing results by life insurers.
