RACGP response - Feedback regarding CTCA

The MBS Review Taskforce, through the Cardiac Services Clinical Committee, recommended a new item be made available for GP-requested CTCA for patients who meet certain requirements. The Department of Health and Aged Care is consulting with relevant professional organisations to discuss whether structured access for GPs to request CTCA will better align MBS items with contemporary clinical evidence and practice, thus improving health outcomes for patients.

The RACGP welcomes consideration of a new item for GPs to request CTCA for a specific population of patients. We support patients having access to CTCA to rule out significant coronary artery disease (CAD) without requiring prior referral to a cardiologist, as this will reduce costs incurred by the patient and within the health system. We also recommend risk assessment should be conducted using the new Australian CVD risk calculator.
