The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners welcomes the schedule 4 listing of cytisine for the treatment of nicotine dependence, including vaping cessation. Cytisine is known to be effective for smoking cessation and has a very low risk of adverse effects. However, it does have contraindications with some common patient comorbidities. Therefore it should be prescribed by a medical practitioner who is able to assess the risk of contraindications and interactions with other medicines that the patient may be already taking.
