Open letter – Concerns regarding recent compliance letter campaign targeting co-claiming of chronic disease and practice nurse support services

The RACGP has written an open letter to Minister for Health and Aged Care Mark Butler about the compliance letters concerning chronic disease and practice nurse MBS items.
We raise a number of concerns in the open letter, including:

  • the lack of clear, consistent guidance on how to correctly bill these items
  • that the letters devalue the care provided by nurses as part of general practice teams, when we’re aiming to strengthen multidisciplinary care
  • that providers are unsure how to respond to the letter and are distressed by having to take time away from patient care to review hundreds of claims
  • the risk that GPs will stop providing chronic disease management through the MBS.
