MSAC application 1736 - Lipoprotein(A) testing as an independent predictor of cardiovascular disease

Last updated 7 December 2022

Summary

Date: 28 October 2022

The RACGP has previously endorsed the 2012 National Vascular Disease Prevention Alliance Guidelines for the management of absolute cardiovascular risk. The guidelines are being currently updated and will include a revised calculator called the Australian Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) risk calculator.

In light of the new draft Australian CVD risk calculator, the proposal to fund measuring Lipoprotein(A) to establish high cardiovascular risk is superfluous. The RACGP recommends the new draft Australian CVD risk calculator should for the basis of cardiovascular risk screening and therefore does not support the application for Lipoprotein(A) testing.
