Summary

Date: 13 January 2022

The RACGP has provided a response to the House Select Committee’s ‘Inquiry into Social Media and Online Safety’.

In the response, the RACGP calls for improvement across all media platforms to prioritise trustworthy sources, which provide evidence-based health information thus limiting the spread of harmful misinformation.

The RACGP encourage the Australian Government to continue to respond swiftly to limit the distribution of misleading health information, particularly around vaccinations, on all media platforms. An appropriate balance must be found between removing harmful information and ensuring people’s right to freedom of speech is maintained.
